I'm just wondering how everyone else is handling the financial crisis facing our country right now and what practical things you are doing to cut back and be more conservative (assuming that you are).

Whew, good questions.  There are a number of things I am doing right now, besides praying and worrying for my family and my loved ones--not to mention the world!  We are looking to refinance our home mortgage to an even lower fixed rate from 6% to 5%.  This will bring our monthly house payment down a little.  We are also tracking absolutely every penny we spend, down on paper.  What's interesting about this practice is you really do become more conscious about where you spend your money and why?  You also spend less, because saving starts to matter more.  We now spend more money on things we need versus what we want.  We also play a game called, How Many Fun Things Can You Do For Free?  It's amazing how long that list can be.  When I live closer to the ground and am more "awake" to my spending habits, I feel solid.   Hope this helps!  And you?

I love that game! We played it a lot growing up. Clap We've done some simple things in our household like cut back some of our channels so that our cable bill is lower. I also called our wireless carrier and signed up for a new plan that would save us some more money. I've been trying to do most of our grocery shopping at Costco so I'm not making all the "little" trips to the grocery store (you know, the trip where you go for a loaf of bread and come home with $100 worth of groceries you didn't even realize you needed!). I have friends who have cut their gardener/pool guy visits by 25-50% saving them money. Others have been able to go to a 4-day office week with 1 day of telecommuting to help save money. Sometimes just these little things added up can make a big difference.
