I am a stay at home mom and have been for almost 10 years now. My kids are in 3rd and 1st grades, so they are in school all day, every day now.  WHEW!  But I now find myself needing something.  I think I would like to go back to work, but being in sales like before, just requires more time than I am willing to spend away from home. My husband commutes 3 hours per day and therefore isn't really available to help.  I feel that I need to be around in the afternoons.  I don't have my degree, only an AA, I feel very stifled, limited and trapped.  I don't really know where to turn or really what my next steps should be. I love being a mom and really enjoy the time with my kids. I volunteer at the school ALOT, but even that is not very fulfilling any longer. Any help/advice that anyone can and wants to give would be appreciated. Thanks! Confused

I feel your pain.  Transitions and self-reinventions are the hardest challenges to face and endure.  Do not despair.  As you watch over your children, you can take this time to think through the next phase of your life.  What are your passions?  What do you really love to do?  What are you good at?  And if you needed to go back to school, you can do so part time--whilst watching your little ones.  One thing I did is took a few classes to see what really turned me on--got me going.  Then, I would also talk to people in various professional fields to see if that sounded like something I wanted to pursue and do as a future career, long term.

This transformational journey is organic and requires tremendous patience.  I know one thing, however, your kids will grow; they will lead their own lives sooner than you think; and having a passion or profession that you can call your very own will be paramount to your well-being and full self-actualization.

You are very talented, with great skill sets.  I'd love to learn more about what you love to do and what you're good at.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. And I know you are Right!  As far as what I love and what I am good at, well, those are good questions.  I frequently ask myself the same thing. I am GREAT at project management. I love having a set of goals everyday and moving paper from one pile to the next. I am great at delegating and achieve huge satisfaction from seeing those goals met or exceeded every day, even if it is something minute.

Lately I have been really into my camera.  I have been looking into photography classes.  I think that is something that I could be very good at and really enjoy.  That is the project for this week, looking into that and seenig the cost and working on the scheduling.  Keep you posted!

I completely agree with admin. I was fortunate enough to also stay home and raise my children for about 5 years. During this time, I stayed active in continuing my education by taking courses at the local community college to work towards finishing my AA. I also volunteered at the kids' school (like you) but asked for more responsibility. I was able to oversee the student counsel for the elementary school and I ran it like a small business. We raised money that we used to fund different projects and donate items to the classrooms. I also organized different events to get the kids excited and experiencing different types of activities. A couple of my favorites were an art contest that we held where the kids (grades 1-5) used recycled materials and a field trip to the courthouse so the student council kids could experience our judicial system. It was just enough to keep my feet wet, my skills honed and my sanity in check.

Desert Dweller--Thank you for sharing your personal stories.  I think women need to see that they can get back into work they like, feeling alive and with their talents appreciated and fully utilized.

I enrolled in a photography class and started this week. It is a non-credit course, but I think it will be fun and I will learn alot.  I am very excited about it and am looking forward to working my assignment this weekend.

I have been in charge of many fundraisers at school and you are right, it does help to see progress and that you are contributing.  But after 5 years of it, I think I need to move on.  This class is a step towards learning something I am very interested in and think I could be good at.  We will see, right?
