Are You Happy with Your Money Life?

By Deborah Price

Money Magic by Deborah PriceDo you feel safe and empowered around money?
As founder of the Money Coaching Institute, author
of Money Magic and as a Money Coach, I’ve helped
many highly capable and intelligent women overcome
self-sabotaging patterns around money. For the most
part, these great women come to me burdened with anxiety
and shame over their circumstances and choices. I’ve heard
many claim that they “don’t know why they just can’t get the money thing” as if there were a “money gene” that they were missing. Well...there’s not. Women are just as capable of making good money choices, personally and professionally, as the other half of the gene pool. The problem, in my experience, is that women have still not become fully empowered around money. Yes, we’ve become successful career women, executives and entrepreneurs, but collectively, we still haven’t mastered the world of money.

Unless we’ve had great financial role models, especially from our mothers, even the most otherwise educated and intelligent women can easily revert to the more traditional patterning of their parents. These inherited patterns are largely unconscious and often contradict “who we are” in other areas of our lives. However, in absence of anything else, we become what we’ve known simply because we haven’t been taught a better way. Financial education is a huge void in our world and it’s easy to fall into that hole.

So, when a very successful female client comes to me and says, “I make $200,000 a year and spend $250,000 and never balance my check book, and oh, I just quit my job”, it’s not surprising to find out that she’s repeating a pattern she inherited from her mother who loved to shop and did so secretly to make herself feel better.

Part of my role as a coach is to remind my clients that they are not their behaviors and that no one teaches us how to be successful with money...which is the real problem.

So, of course, we’re bound to make mistakes! Our work as women is to realize that money as a subject is the last taboo and needs to be explored and healed so that we can make clear and informed choices that serve us and our future. We can no longer afford to be the “innocent” archetype and take the ostrich approach to money, or be financially impulsive or avoidant. The fact that no one taught us about money, personal finance, salary negotiations, or anything that really matters is not our fault. We do, however, owe it to ourselves to find the help and support we need to overcome whatever limits us. And not being empowered around money is highly self-limiting and potentially, self-sabotaging. So, I say, it’s time for us to raise our collective financial self-esteem and know that we are capable of conquering the money domain just as we have conquered others. By choosing to become fully empowered personally, professionally and financially, we can achieve the peace of mind and freedom we deeply desire and greatly deserve.

I invite you to explore the deeper side of money in your life. It is a very rich and complex aspect of who we are as human beings. I offer you these questions to begin exploring your relationship with money. It is a very worthwhile journey.

What messages about money did you receive in your childhood from your parents?

How do those messages influence and inform your experience with money today?

If money were not an obstacle, what would you do differently in your life today?
